Hurricane Ivor seems to be the right choice as Minzaal’s top-rated rival needs the run after a year. The progressive profile of Hurricane Ivor is unmatched in the entire line-up. Leg 2 – Hukum (Ascot, 2:40)
In the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes over 1m 4f, it may be worth forgiving Hukum his Kempton defeat last month. His third Hardwicke Stakes victory over course and distance at this royal meeting is a great feat. The tight, nippy track didn’t play to his strengths when last in action. This more demanding course should suit.
A strong travelling four-year-old, Hukum has form over further, so he won’t lack for stamina. He doesn’t mind a bit of cut in the ground either. Hukum’s trainer, Owen Burrows, has always thought highly of him. It would not surprise that the son of Sea The Stars won a third group 3 of the season. Hukum is a 2/1 chance to do that at Ascot.

Leg 3 – Glen Shiel (Ascot, 3:15)
Every drop of rain that falls suits last year’s Champions Sprint Stakes scorer Glen Shiel. He returns to the site of his greatest victory in the 6f Group3 Bengough Stakes. Archie Watson’s sprinting star escapes a penalty here too, so this looks a good opening for him to win again.
Glen Shiel has course- and distance-form figures of 12. Both of these runs were at the top level. Only Dream Of Dreams was too long to be able to run at Royal Ascot in Diamond Jubilee. He either hasn’t got his ground or tried further since. This seven-year-old could be back in the lead at 3/1 if he keeps an eye on weather.

Leg 4 – Al Rufaa (Ascot, 3:50)
The feature 7f Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap sees eye-catching Sandown second Al Rufaa running for John and Thady Gosden. The four-year-old Kingman horse, Al Rufaa, won three times last summer. He has since gained an ease in the weights. Al Rufaa was a stand-up performer and he ran up the Esher hill well when he was last active.
Al Rufaa had an entry in Cambridgeshire, but connections come to him instead. Al Rufaa could be a contender for the finish here, with a 100-point mark. He has a strong pace so he only needs gaps in 18-runner field to make it happen at the right time. Al Rufaa is 15/2 to win the Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap.
