Yolanda Perez is an American singer who specializes in banda music. She’s known by her stage name “The Potranquita”, a name taken by her father from his hometown of Zacatecas, Mexico.

Yolanda Perez was born in Los Angeles, California. When she was 11 years old she won a music contest held in Lynwood, California. As part of the prize, she recorded an album that launched her career. Yolanda has since recorded several more albums with Kimo’s Music her original record label. Her career was especially enhanced when she signed with Fonovisa Records, part of Univision Music Group.

Yolanda Perez followed in the footsteps of her father and grandparents who were also exponents of banda music. Her albums had all the traditional characteristics of banda, but “Dejame Llorar” which combined the banda sound with modern elements such as rap, and the introduction of dialogue in some songs. Her music also shows other influences from hip hop and R & B – this has led to include Spanglish phrases in some songs, as in the duet “Estoy Enamorada” with Don Cheto. Yolanda Perez, therefore also follow a traditional banda example, has put her own stamp and interpretation of this genre.

Yolanda Perez also has made public service announcements and has participated in charity events. In 2006 she volunteered to help with the campaign “Got Milk”, explaining that women in Latin America tend to worry about external beauty, but should also focus on your diet.
