From an early age Raquel began to sing and participate in competitions and festivals that took the top spots. In 1983 she won the support of Cuban television "Todo el mundo canta." She studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba where she earned a Bachelor of Music with a major in singing. In her third year at the school she made her first trip to Peru with the Teatro Lírico in the province of Holguin. Also conducted eight performances of Verdi's Traviata at the Teatro Garcia Lorca in Cuba.
