Ozomatli is a band formed in 1996, based in Los Angeles, California. They are known both for his political activism as for their diversity of musical styles, including Spanish rock, Latin Hip-Hop, Salsa and Cumbia. Their albums combine songs in English and Spanish, and Ozomatli's members are remarkably diverse racially.
The name comes from Nahuatl, and refers to the astrological symbol of the monkey in the Aztec calendar, as well as the God of dance and fire.
Ozomatli began their career in Los Angeles and in the border area of San Diego and Tijuana. After an appearance at a local magazine event, the group expanded its audience and released their first album, Ozomatli, in June of '98.
