The traditional Norteño fivesome Los Cardenales de Nuevo Leon began by playing small clubs in Monterrey. Lead singer/jajo sexto player Cesareo Sanchez Chavez names his band after defunct '60s group Los Cardenales de Linares.
In 1987 Los Cardenales was signed by DISA record label and their first record Si Yo Fuera El produces the hit single "Vestido Blanco." With a genuine sound that included the accordion and bajo sexto, Los Cardenales soared with their signature hits, including "La Perra Madura," "Y, Como es el?" "Amor de Unas Horas," and "Y, Que Mas Da?" Their 1994 album Fuego contra Fuego included the song "Soy lo Peor," which was written by Armando Manzanero, and "Para Olvidarme de Ti," which was written by Sergio Villarreal, singer of Ladron.
