The Latin Grammy Awards were launched in the United States for CBS. It was the first Spanish-language television program broadcast in prime time by a U.S. network. Similar to the Grammy, the Latin Grammy Awards recognize artistic and technical excellence in the arts and sciences of recorded music through peer voting. It has become a prestigious prize in Latin music. Among the artists who have achieved this award are: Shakira, Franco de Vita, Juan Luis Guerra, Juanes, Alejandro Sanz, Ricardo Montaner.
The Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences was formed by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 1997. It was founded by Michael Greene and Mauricio Abaroa.
