La Misma Luna is a Mexican film starring Kate del Castillo and Adrian Alonso, which is about the life of undocumented Mexicans living in the United States. It was directed by Patricia Riggen in Mexico.
The film tells the story of Rosario (Kate del Castillo), a mother who emigrated illegally to the United States, and her nine year old son, Carlitos (Adrian Alonso). Rosario and Carlitos have not seen each other in four years, as Carlitos was five when he last seen Rosario. Rosario, who now lives in Los Angeles, California, calls her son (in Mexico), every Sunday. Carlitos lives in a small Mexican town with his ailing grandmother, aunt and oppressive uncle, that will keep him in order to get the money Rosario sends. One day, Carlitos encounters two immigrant transporters (coyotes), Marta (America Ferrera) and David (Jesse Garcia), who offered to smuggle children across the border. When his grandmother dies, Carlitos decides he can not live with his aunt and uncle and finds the two coyotes. Although Carlitos successfully cross the border without being discovered, the car is hidden and towed and is separated from the two coyotes. After getting separated, Carlitos follows the journey, eventually helping other illegal immigrants who pick tomatoes. However, the immigration police raid the building, and almost all of workers are trapped or escape, leaving only Charlie and another worker named Enrique (Eugenio Derbez). Enrique initially refuses to help Carlitos, but soon grows a bond with him. Enrique and Carlitos take a city tours trying to locate a telephone booth trying to call his mother Rosario, but are unsuccessful. One day, Charlie is sleeping on a park bench, Enrique leaves and goes to buy food and Carlitos is discovered by the police. Carlitos is almost caught by the police, but Henry throws food to the officers, causing the agents to chase Enrique chase him instead. Charlie manages to escape, but Henry is captured. Carlitos runs away and coincidentally stops at the bus stop from which his mother calls him. Carlito sees Rosario on the street phone, and they meet at last ... |
